Track Spotlight: Ringu by Melankolia
By Randal Silvey · On 10:39 PMWhat started as a good idea got lost in the Halloween holiday shuffle. Luckily no one seemed to be looking... Well, not really lucky but it is what it is. The short lived compilation album track-a-day spotlight is what I'm referring to here. No sense in letting poor execution spoil a good idea though so we are resurrecting the concept but with a couple of modifications. One, track-a-day is becoming track-a-whenever. Two, we're opening it up to tracks from any of the EMG albums and perhaps even beyond to songs from any EMG member's album.
So without further ado, today's Track Spotlight:
This Asian horror film inspired track comes to us by way of Melankolia. Formed in 2008, Melankolia is a U.S. based solo Ethereal/Neo-classical/Dark Ambient project. Self described as seeking "to create music for evening/introspective listening", Melankolia certainly knows how to set a mood with an uncanny ability to balance tranquility with a certain kind of emotional turmoil.
Melankolia was kind enough to contribute Ringu to the line-up of the recently released "The Last Halloween Vol. II", EMG's 2013 Halloween season compilation. It also appears on the excellent (and appropriately titled) compilation album "Dark Ambient Vol. 6" released by Sombre Soniks Studios. Check that album out for a ton of great dark ambient music by various artists. Melankolia is signed to indie label Nine Gates Records, another fantastic source for dark and sometimes disturbing ambient artists.
